My favorite site was probably Chp. 19.Taxing Snack Foods: What to Expect For Diet and Tax Revenues http://www.ers.usda.gov/Publications/aib747/aib74708.pdf This article is about health researchers and health poilicies trying to levy taxes on snack foods as a possible way to stop obesity in the U.S. Some of the proposals suggested that the higher prices will help stop the growing obesity rate. The article explains how the impact of the teaxes will hold a survey of food purchases. The impacts will be mostly to the saltier snacks. The outcome might result in $40-100 million in tax revenues.
http://www.ncpad.org/nutrition/fact_sheet.php?sheet=197&view=all Chapter 18 Down syndrome Dietary Needs Kids with Down syndrome usually have lower caloric needs compared to their peers. The reason for this is because they don’t burn as many calories as a child without Down syndrome. So, instead of limiting their calories, an increase of physical activity is recommended because if you take away food, important vitamins and minerals will be missing from their diet. The high rate of obesity in Down syndrome kids could be due to medications, limited lifestyles, and other medical concerns. Some suggestions to help decrease obesity for kids with Down syndrome are to offer fresh fruits and vegetables, promote a nutrient-dense diet by offering choices that are high in nutrients, and to encourage exercise. I am wanting to be a special education teacher and that is why I decided to share this information.
I really love this website because it gives a safe place for families and children share their fears and questions about diabetes with other families that are experiencing the same things. Also this website has outside research for parents or teachers to learn more about this disease along with recipies and local events for diabetes research.
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/childhood-obesity/DS00698 Chapter 1 Childhood Obesity This website gives a lot of good information on childhood obesity. Some of the topics covered include causes, risk factors, prevention, and coping and support. The prevention page gives some good ideas, such as setting a good example, seeing the doctor regularly for check-ups, and being positive. This is a great website for parents as well as teachers. I chose to share this website because so many of our young children are becoming overweight and obese. This is something that can easily be prevented, and this website gives good information about how to prevent it, how to cope and support your child, and even complications from obesity (which might make people take the issue a little more seriously).
http://www.snacksfortoddlers.com/ Chapter 18 This was my favorite website because it offers a bunch of different snack ideas that incorporate different food groups. I think this site would be useful for parents and daycares that serve snacks to children because it offers different options that include different food groups so the kids receive the nutrients they need. Also, a lot of the snacks can be made quickly and usually the kids can help.
http://www.mypyramid.gov/ Chapter 13 This website contains a lot of information about the food pyramid. It lists all the different food groups and tells all about each one in detail. This site offers personalized eating plans an interactive tools to help plan and assess food choices based on the dietary Guidlines for Americans. You can look up certain foods, learn healthy eating tips, and learn about weight loss. This website offers infomaion for all audiences.
As I looked at this website, I realized that this is a fantastic website to use for teaching as well as information on the Food Guide Pyramid. I am a P.E./Health teacher at Gateway Middle School and I am teaching the Food Guide Pyramid right now. There is a lot of information that I can use from this website and implement that information into my lesson. Everything that you need to know about the Food Guide Pyramid and nutritional needs is all in this website. It talks about steps to a healthier diet as well as dietary guidelines. This website also provides interactive tools that the students will be able to enjoy while they are learning about the Food Guide Pyramid. I will definitely be using this website as a teaching source.
This website has alot of good information for the genral public about healthy eating and ways to look to see if food is cooked throughtly. Some helpful links on this website are food bourne illness, safe food handling, education, campaigns, and basic recalls. One of the fun sections on this website is the myth buster section; it is very similar to the show myth busters. The genral public writes in questions they have about food and healthy ating and the experts tell them wether it is true or false. This website was very parent and children friendly. I liked it alot.
This website is my favorite because it is not only a website that can be used with the family, but as a teacher you can use this in the classroom. It has many enjoyable things that kids may use to learn more about their health and safety. As a teacher you could use the quizzes provided to see what they know or what they have learned after talking about different topics.
http://www.preventive-health-guide.com/ This website is all about all different ways that prevent health works. This site focuses on wellness rather than sickness. It gives many explains many different exercises that can to taken into action to help prevent sicknesses in the future and also precautions that can be taken if you have come into contact with a sick person. People can sent the author of this site questions and he will answer them. So if you are ever wondering about a prevention question, you can ask the question on this site.
This website is very helpful for anybody with or expecting a young child. The information on this website is up to date and relevant. The links on the page are easy to follow, but there is a lack of real categories. The website also offers an easy way to contact them. Seeing how up to date the website is, I can imagine their response time is pretty quick, which is good when dealing with children so young. One article I found really interesting is the “Supporting Military Families” article in the featured section. This article is a good example of how useful and relevant the information on this website is. Jake Harris
I really like this website because it focuses just for the child. There are many websites that offer recipes but they are catered to adults. This one is broken down into breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, and fast food. Under each category there are different recipes that are healthy for toddlers to eat. It also gives you information on what foods contain the right vitamins and minerals that toddlers should be having. I think its a great website to use if you are not sure what's healthy to feed a young child especially if you are watching what they are eating.
I like this web site because it gives parents, and anyone that wants to know, how or what to feed a child to make sure that they receive the best food for growth as possible. It also gives you links for behavior, emotional, and environmental health.
http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=3028650#3rd Chapter 18 How to get kidsw involved This site was from the American Heart Association and it was my favorite website so far because it had a ton of resources for the classroom and the home. It had print outs of: "Healthy-Heart Menus, a "Be Choosy" menu with very vercitile menu underneth for the kids to chose from, "Why do people excercise", and "Rate the Snack". This would be agreat site to use in a health class to keep track of excercise or eating habits among students. Also a very good site for the home. It really helps kids stay involved in and take control of their eating habits at a younger age so that they don't have obesity problems later in life. In addition to many resources the site has links to the NFL site, Jump Rope for the Heart site, Meet the Fats and other great sites that will continue to educate young children and even adults of the ongoing weight problem and how to take proactive steps to fix it. All in all, great resource that can be used within the classroom and outside. It is also relivant to all ages.
this website offers guidelines to follow from when you should take your child to the doctor. If there is a problem, we want to know what it is, and we want to know how to fix it. Going to the doctor every time your child's temperature is high, results in needless waiting room time, and the exposure of your child to more germs, not to mention the doctor's bills.
My favorite website so far this semester has been kidshealth.org/kid/stay_healthy/food/go_slow_whoa.html. It has a great vocabulary for young children when teaching them which food are healthy and which are not.
My favorite site is so easy to use. This website was created for teaching kids how to stay safe. There are sections for home safety, yard safety, falls, fires, lighting and more. The site is very colorful and well made. The information is a bit short under each page, but that might be because it is intended for kids to be able to read it. The site will appeal to kids because of the graphics. April Vandiver
Lindsay Larson My favorite site was probably Chp.16. Healthy Snacks for Children. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/childrens-health/MY00383 This site had ten tips on healthier snacking for children and I found the recipes to be both enjoyable and easy for kids to make. I made a couple of them with my five year old niece, we had a lot of fun and the snacks were good!
Julia Guthrie http://www.snacksfortoddlers.com I love this website because it offeres all different kinds of snacks that are nuritional for children. It is a great source to for teachers and parents to find good snacks for their toddlers that will also be healthy for them! Check it out!!!
Source: http://news.health.com/2010/02/05/baby-fat-or-obesity/2/ This article states that parents are clueless about their child’s weight. There was a study in 2006 that showed the parents who have obese children, only one-half recognized that their child was overweight. The article makes it a point to people that as parents you can’t trust your eyes, because parents like to believe no matter what their child is healthy. The words “big boned” are used frequently with parents who have obese children. “We gain many of our perceptions from comparison with peers,” she says. “So if we compare a healthy-weight child with their overweight classmates, we may even think they are too skinny and try to feed them up.”- this is from a school that was interviewed in the article.
