Health, Safety and Nutrition Cluster Class Spring 2011

Develop a question using information from the 2011 edition of our Health, Safety, and Nutrition textbook that can be answered within three to six sentences. One student should respond to that question and pose the question they've developed. Only one answer per question. This will create a chain of questions and answers that will be interesting to read when everyone has contributed.

According to the textbook, what are four conditions that contribute to unintentional injuries in children?

Cindy Tittel said...

Unintentional injuries in children may be caused from fatigue, change, distraction or group-care settings. When children have not been given a clear explanation of a change in rules or rules have not been established it can lead to these injuries. In addition, another condition that contributes to unintentional injuries is when a child is new and is not familiar with the environment, rules and expectations. Rushing the children or planning late in the day acts as a contributing factor also. Finally, inadequate adult supervision can lead to unintentional injuries. For example, a shortage of teachers may not provide adequate supervision.

According to the textbook, what are three ways to tell if a childs symptoms are a cold or allergy?

Stacy Singer said...

According to the textbook on page 86, a cold is more likely to occur in the fall and winter. Allergies may be year round or seasonal, depending on the allergies the child experiences. A fever is common with colds and very rare in the case of allergies. A child will experience itchy eyes with an allergy, but not with a cold. A child with a cold will also experience muscle aches in the onset, but no aches with allergies. And lastly, nasal drainage may turn color with a cold, but remains clear with allergies.
