Airborne Transmission- Disease causing pathogens are carried on tiny droplets of moisture that are expelled during coughs, sneezes, or while talking.
Fecal-Oral Transmission- Pinworms, hepatitis A, Salmonella, and giardiasis.
Direct Transmission- Ringworm, athlete's foot, impetigo, hepatitis B, and Conjunctivitis
Indirect Transmission- water, Milk, dust, food, toys, towels, eating utensils, animals or insect, finally colds, and influezna

The nine daily health observations for identifying children in the early stages of a communicable disease include unusually pale or flushed skin, red or sore throat, enlarged lymph glands, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, spots, open lesions, watery or red eyes, headache or dizziness, chills, fever, achiness, fatigue, or loss of appetite. Some other observations that teachers can make in the classroom include sleeping habits, facial expression, or comments made by the child. Adults can usually tell if a child is not feeling well. It is important as a teacher to address these signs and symptoms so that certain child can be taken care of and to help prevent illnesses from spreading around the classroom.

Common signs of children who are malnurished include irregular height for age, irregular weight for height, eyes with crusting, puffiness, or paleness of inner lids, pallor or scaliness skin, caries or mottling teeth, puffy, dark red, or bleeding gums, lips with cracking at corners of mouth, and a tongue that has cracking, smooth spots, or deep red color. These are the common signs of malnurished children.

- sensorineural loss which results when the structures of teh inner ear or the auditory nerve have been damaged or do not function properly.

1. They do not realize that some communicable illnesses are still life-threatening.
2. They believe that antibiotics are available to sure any infectious illness so they are willing to take a chance.

Four possible causes of fainting are anemia, breath-holding, hyperventilation, extreme stress, excitement, or hysteria.
What are four common symptoms of food allergies? (Chapter 5)
Four common symptoms of food allergies are:
1. hives or skin rashes
2. a flushed or pale face
3. cramps, vommiting and/or diarrhea
4. a runny nose, watery eyes, congestion and/or wheezing
According to the textbook (Chapter 9), what are four conditions that contribute to unintentional injuries in children?
Unintentional injuries are caused by environmental hazards, lack of appropriate planning, lack of adult supervision, and a child's immature development. These conditions are all manageable with improved knowledge and awareness.
Discuss why rules are not a substitute for adult supervision? (Chapter 9)
Rules should never replace adult supervision because children forget rules often and need to be reminded, especially when they are busy playing or excited about what they are doing. Rules should be realistic and allow children enough freedom within boundaries of safety. There also needs to be adult supervision because some students who keep disobeying the rules may need to be removed from the play area for awhile. It is important to let them return to the activity later so that you build confidence in them that you know they are able to follow rules.

The four stages of communicable diseases are incubation, prodromal, acute, and convalescence.

What are some early symptoms of diabetes ?
Some of the early signs of diabetes are: rapid weight loss, fatigue and/or weakness, nausea or vomiting, frequent urination, dehydration, excessive thirst and/or hunger, and dry, itchy skin.
Which type of abuse has the highest percentage of all abuse categories?
The largest percentage of abuse if actually neglect. Neglect constitutes 62.4% of abuse while physical is 17.5%, sexual is 9.7%, and emotional is 7%. Some of the characteristics of neglect are dirty clothing or hair, unpleasant odor, child is in need of medical or dental care, child is often hungry. Some other characteristics of neglect are inappropriately dressed for weather conditions, being chronically tired, and spending time alone, away from other children.
What are the features of children's indoor and outdoor environments that require speical attention? Give one important reason for each one.

Indoor-the arrangement of space, or basic floor plan, should be examined carefully to determine the ease of conducting specific activities. For example the traffic flow should allow ample room for children to arrive and depart without disturbing others who are playing.
Outdoor- Play equipment-careful attention must be given to its selection, placement, and maintenance. Choices of equipment should be based on amount of available play space, age and developmental appropriateness, variety of learning experiences provided quality and safety of construction, accessibility to all children.
What are tow professional and moral obligations teachers have to protect children's safe-being?
(Chapter 9)
One obligation a teacher has is to report any suspected cases a student maltreatment. This a requirement of the law by most states.
A second obligation to protect student's safe being is to follow universal precautions. The single, most effective one being hand washing. This will prevent the spread of communicable illness.
